Mr. Brooks was one of the pioneers of this county, having come here from New York in company with two brothers, in 1835, and located land near where he died. His oldest son now resides on the farm that he then located. He went back to New York in the fall, and returned with his wife to Michigan the following year. Deceased was born in Bristol, Connecticut and was a bred farmer, but when about 18 years of age he began peddling Yankee notions. After that he was engaged in the dry goods business at Livonia, N.Y., for several years. He married his first wife, Amelia F. Bushnell, February 27th, 1834. This wife came to Michigan with him and helped to found the beautiful pioneer home. She died September 8th, 1852. Mr. B. married for his second wife Sophia Clift of Onondaga county, N.Y., December 31st, 1854. She died May 20th, 1875. He leaves a daughter and two sons grown up—two sons having previously died. Mr. Brooks was a man of very strong prejudices, but his word was as good as most men’s bonds. If a man was honest and honorable with him they need not ask for a warmer or more staunch friend; but if he found a man dishonest, they could count on his enmity for all time. For more than twenty-five years he was chairman of the democratic township committee of Portage, and was a staunch believer in, and warm supporter of that party, during his life. The funeral will take place from the residence, Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. Note: The deceased was a brother of Charles and Willard Brooks of Danby, and was well known to many of our citizens. He owned several tracts of land in this vicinity, which he took up from the Government. One tract of 160 acres lies just west of this village, and is quite valuable on account of its location and timber. Eight of his relatives from this vicinity attended the funeral.
