Enlargement of the heart is given as the cause of death. Mr. Brooks, whose maiden name was Macomber, was among the earliest pioneers of this section, having come to Eagle with her parents from Sheldon, Wyoming county, N.Y., in 1845. She taught school in the “old red school house” in Portland and in other districts surrounding it during the years from 1845 to 1950, and on the 22nd of January of which year she married Charles Brooks, having been his second wife, he having married in New York state in 1837, then coming to Danby and settling on the farm where the subject of this sketch died. No children of the first marriage are living; but Mrs. Brooks is survived by W. C. and Henry Brooks, Mrs. Charles Peake of Danby and Mrs. T. C. Lyon of Bassett, Nebraska. Deceased joined the Baptist church at her old home in 1837; but in 1845 became identified with the Portland Methodist church and continued a member until her death. Funeral services over her remains were conducted from her late home on Friday afternoon last by Rev. Carlisle and burial made in Portland cemetery. Card of Thanks: Owing to the fact that it is almost impossible to thank everyone personally, we desire in this public way to thank each and every one who rendered us assistance during the sickness and after the death of our mother; also the Epworth League for the floral offering; and the choir for the music, assuring you that your kindness will never be forgotten.
