Brown, son of James W. and Eleanor Brown, who died Tuesday, was born in Ontario, Canada, July 17, 1842. Just as the day faded away into night, so did the lamp of his life pass out of the house of clay in which he had lived 89 years and 21 days. Mr. Brown was one of a family of 10 children, born to parents of English descent. He left Canada and worked on a farm in New York state, later clerked in a store and worked one year in a machine shop. He then returned to his home in Ontario, and there met Katharine Thompson whom he married September 10, 1873. To this union six children were born, Alva J., Emily, Lillian, Walker, Ira, and Amy L., who survive him. Mr. and Mrs. Brown moved to Easton township in March 1874. There he became one of the leading farmers of Ionia County. He served as moderator of the district school board, and was much interested in the education of his children and others. He leaves his wife, and son, Alva J., of Easton; also the following daughters and sons, Mrs. Emily Austin, of Detroit; Lillian, of Kalamazoo; Walker, of Evanston, Ill.; Ira, of Chicago, and Mrs. Amy L. McMeains, of Aztex, New Mexico. There are also five grandchildren, Douglas, Dortha, and Kenneth Austin, of Detroit, Ruth and Robert McMeains, of Aztex, New Mexico, and two sisters and one brother: Mrs. Sarah Holidaya, Mrs. Eleanor McIntosh and Omer Brown, all of Ontario, Canada. The funeral service was held from the home Saturday. Rev. F. P. Frye, of Saranac, officiated. Interment was made in Easton cemetery.
