Portland Observer, 26 Aug 1903

With the death of “Aunt” Betsey Brown at her home in this village last Saturday
afternoon there passed from earth one of the early pioneers of the state and one
of the oldest residents of Ionia county.

Betsey Tyler was born in Oneida county, N.Y., October 7, 1818, and the family
came into Oakland county, Michigan, in 1837, and to Orange, this county, the
following year, thus being among the pioneers of Michigan and the county.  She
was married to John Brown the first day of the year 1840, and in 1867, after the
death of her husband in 1860, she came to Portland to reside and continued her
residence in the village until her death.  The subject of this sketch was one of
the charter members of the Portland Baptist church, which was organized 63 years
ago last June, and she was the only surviving constituent member of that
organization and had always been a constituent and faithful member of it.  She
was one of those motherly, big-hearted ladies whom to know is to love and
respect.  She was a member of a family of seven children and five lived to be
more than seventy years of age.

Mrs. Brown is survived in her immediate family by three children.  Mrs. Dr.
Allen and Sophia Brown of Portland and Mrs. A.N. Hixson of North Yokima,
Washington; also by two sisters, Mrs. Laura Crawford of Owosso and Mrs. Hiram
Briggs of Portland.

Funeral services were conducted from the house on Tuesday afternoon by Rev.
Stewart and interment made in Portland cemetery.
