Brown, who died early Tuesday morning, July 20, many relatives, neighbors and friends gathered Thursday afternoon at his late residence at Smyrna to attend the funeral services. The Rev. H.S. Ellis, pastor of Ashley Baptist church and for many years a close friend of Mr. Brown, gave a short and appropriate address in which he told of the splendid qualities of the deceased and comforted those sorrowing for their loss. The pastor said: “Like a radiant star which has shone for years, has been the life of our friend and as we discover what a benefit that star has been to humanity, when it is gone, so do we realize the value of the life of our friend, when he is taken from us. “He lived all his days, always happy, always courageous to face difficult tasks of the workaday world and always ready to help another fellow being. Understanding and kindly, he believed in the goodness of God and man. Though he is gone from this world, he will forever live in the memories of those who knew and loved him.” Mrs. Luther Berry and Mrs. Bert Rummler sand “Crossing the Bar” and other hymns during the service. Former neighbors of Mr. Brown, residing near Cook’s Corners, where he lived for many years, acted as pall bearers. The body was laid to rest in Otisco cemetery. Besides his widow, Mrs. Adah Brown, the immediate relatives left are: four sisters, Mrs. Jane B. Showers of Belding, Mrs. Cullen Wiggins of Moseley, Mrs. George O. Taylor and Mrs. E.M. Parney, both of Belding; and one brother, Mr. William Brown of Missouri. Many nieces and nephews are also left. Seylon LaMott Brown was born on October 8, 1851, in Grand Rapids. Soon after his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Brown moved to a farm in Vergennes, where Mr. Brown lived until 1876 when he was married to Miss Adah Walkins. After living on farms in Osceola and Allegan counties, Mr. and Mrs. Brown moved, more than 15 years ago to Cook’s Corners, where they lived until about a month before Mr. Brown’s death, when they moved to Smyrna. Mr. Brown was always highly interested in the good of the community where he resided and served for many years as superintendent of various county Sunday schools and also as district school director.
