Brown, 78, of Belding died Wednesday morning, March 12, 2003, at his home. He was born Jan. 30, 1925 in Belding, the son of Bernie and Florence Orlowski Brown. Melvin was a veteran of World War II, serving as one of the original Rangers in the 3rd Battalion in the United States Army, and was wounded during combat in Italy. After the war he and his wife owned Brown’s Clothing Store in Belding, and Melvin later worked at Bricker Lumber Co. He was married June 1, 1946, in Belding, to Annabel Riedelbaugh. He was preceded in death by his wife, Annabel Brown, in 1994; and his parents. He is survived by his children and their spouses, James L. and Barbara Clements of Arlington, Texas, Connie and Ian Bain of Milford, Dennis and Glenna Brown of Portland, Janel and Charles Bryant of Belding; 12 grandchildren and 17 great- grandchildren; his brothers and sisters and their spouses, Delmar Brown of Belding, Leo and Karen Brown of Sheridan, Jean VanderMel of Newark, Calif., Carmen and John Geisen of Belding. Funeral services are 1 p.m. Saturday at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding, with Deacon Howard Scheid officiating. Interment will be in the spring in Otisco Township Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans.
