Ionia Sentinel Standard, Weekender - Sat. June 29, 2013

Gaylia Brown, 93, of Hastings formerly of Ionia passed away June 16, 2013. She 
was born Aug. 28, 1919 in Yale, the daughter of Milton D. and Ruby (Davis) 
Brown. She attended Flint High School in 1937 where she was a championship 
tennis player. Gaylia met her husband, George Laten Brown in a coffee shop in 
Ionia. They courted and were later married in Lansing in 1947.

She and her husband George owned and operated a Barber and Beauty Shop. She 
later taught China painting. Gaylia loved collecting antiques, restoring  
antique lamps for dealers and of course her art.

She enjoyed traveling with her husband and had visited all the states except 
Hawaii.

Gaylia was a member of the First Congregational Church in Lake Odessa, Charter 
member of the Ionia Historical Society, Ionia Women's Literary Club of America, 
American Legion Auxiliary, Ionia Hospice and Michigan Performing Artists.

She is survived by her nephews, Dr. Richard (Marilyn) Brown, Mick (Jill) 
VanDeVelde, Monte (Donna) Baum and Jon Stalter; and many great nieces and 
nephews. 

She was preceded by her husband George in 2003.

Memorial Services will be held at the First Congregational Church in Lake 
Odessa at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28 with Pastor Mark Jarvie officiating. 
Interment Lakeside Cemetery.
