April 22, 2003 Joseph E. Brown, 62, of Saranac passed away on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2003. He was born December 15, 1940 in Ionia, the son of Edward H. and Sarah H. (McGannon) Brown. Mr. Brown was a 1958 graduate of Ionia High School. He was married to Janet Gooding from 1959 to 1975. In 1980 he married Sandra Brooke and together he and Sandra established the Saranac Education Foundation to benefit the children of Saranac Community School. He was a longtime partner in The Brown Corporation in Ionia with his father and brothers before retiring in 1993. He was an avid golfer, fisherman and a friend to many people. He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Vivian; sons, Toby and Matthew, and a stepbrother, Daryl Lilly. Surviving are his wife of 23 years, Sandra of Saranac; six children, Edward (Susan) Brown of Hudsonville, Joseph (Tonya) Brown Jr. of Fenwick, Michael, James, Bartley and Adam Brown all of Saranac; five grandchildren, Alexander, Leslie, Andrew, Nicholas and Ann Brown; two brothers, Charles (Kathleen) Brown of East Grand Rapids, and Richard Brown of Ada; four sisters, Ann (Tom) Scovel of Grandville, Mary Wilkinson of Grand Rapids, Pat Swaska, and Olive Brown both of New York; stepsister Ruth (Fred) Slager; and step sister-in-law Sally Lilly; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be conducted by the Rev. Martin Culver, Pastor, at 1 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, 105 E. Main Street, Ionia, with interment following at Balcom Cemetery, Ionia. The family will receive friends at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Cook Chapel, 220 Rich Street, Ionia, form 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday.
