BROWN IONIA - Vannie M.Brown, 93, of Ionia died Feb. 25 at Ionia County Memorial Hospital. Born Dec. 14, 1897, in Ronald Township, she was the daughter of Hebert and Lucetta Leach Smith. She was a life and gold member of Queen Esther Chapter No 35, Order of the Eastern Star, and served as Worthy Matron in 1932. In 1950, she was appointed as Grand Esther of the Order of the Eastern Star in Michigan. Long well-known to the public in general, she served as Deputy Register of Deeds o Ionia County from 1935 to 1943 and from 1943-1945, she served a Register of Ionia County Probate Court. Following county service, she was employed by Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company from 1947 to 1954, and then joined Ionia County Agricultural and Stabilization and Conservation Service as a loan clerk until her retirement in 1965. She was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church. She is survived by two sons, Elwin Brown of Ionia and Robert Brown of Marion; 16 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren, as well as nieces, nephews and cousins. Her husband Charles preceded her in death in 1981 A son, Edward, died in 1983, and a great grandson, Toby, died in 1981. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Thursday from First United Methodist church, with the Rev. Keith Bovee officiating. Organist will be Marilyn Brill and soloist will be Karen Murawa. Burial will be in Balcom Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Charles T.Brown, Joseph Brown, Richard Brown, Douglas Brown, Thomas Phillips and Thomas Scovel. Honorary pallbearers are to be George Trautman, Raymond Peabody and Clarence S.Johnson. The family will be at cook Funeral Home Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m and 7 to 8:30 p.m. Memorials have been established for First United Methodist church Memorial Fund and the Queen Esther Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, in care of the funeral home.
