He suffered an attack of apoplexy two years ago and never recovered. Death was due in part to this cause. Having lived in North Plains all his life, Mr. Brown was one of the foremost boosters of anything that was for the community’s good. He was foremost in efforts to build the North Plains Union church and was one of the first to advocate good schools for that township. Mr. Brown’s father was one of the first settlers in Ionia county. He was the oldest pioneers of North Plains township. The tree still stands near the present Brown residence under which Mr. Brown’s parents camped the first night after arriving at the place where they made their home. Mr. Brown, himself, has never lost the right to vote in the same precinct. Mr. Brown’s higher education was obtained at Olivet college and M.A.C. He was a student in the latter institution when the war broke out. Upon joining the Northern forces Mr. Brown was assigned to the navy as an attaché of the Lower Mississippi squadron. His only son is William Mason Brown, with whom he has long made his home. Funeral services for Mr. Brown will be held Tuesday at 2 o’clock at the North Plains Union church, Rev. C. R. Strobridge of Yale will officiate. Burial will be under the auspices of Lyons lodge No. 37, F.&A.M. at North Plains cemetery.
