He came to Hubbardston when about nine years old. At the age of 19 he enlisted in the 16th Michigan Infantry. Before he had seen any service he was taken with typhoid fever. He reenlisted in 1863 in the First Michigan Engineers and Mechanics. He was with Gen. Sherman in his famous march from Atlanta to the sea. He was mustered out in October 1865. Mr. Brown was married Oct. 25th, 1866 to Jane E. Castle, who died five years later. To this union were born two children; Carrie Helen and Mary Monica. On December 25, 1872 he was married to Roxy L. Castle, who survives him, having been his companion for over 56 years. Three children were born to this union; Abbie Castle; William Osmond and Bernice Belle, the first, Mrs. H. C. Miller of Fowler, being the only one of the five children now living. Since his first marriage Mr. Brown has owned three farms at different times. He spent five years on a farm in Bushnell township, Montcalm county, nine years on a farm 1½ miles southwest of Hubbardston and about 40 years on a farm two miles east of the village. For the last 12 years he has lived in Hubbardston. He was a loyal member of the G.A.R. as long as that organization continued in Hubbardston and he took a great deal of pride in his membership. He was naturally of cheerful disposition and always looked on the bright side of things. Throughout his life he was strong and rugged in health until several months before his death paralysis made him a helpless invalid. He leaves beside his wife and daughter, three grandchildren and four great- grandchildren. Funeral service was held Tuesday afternoon at the home, Rev. Floyd N. Drake officiating. The burial was in the West Side Cemetery. Men from the American Legion were pallbearers.
