Brown, 77, of Saranac, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2002, at his home. He was born Sept. 2, 1925, in Deerfield Center, the son of Hugh and Katherine Haney Brown. Brownie married Phyllis Reynolds on Sept. 4, 1947, in Six Lakes. He served as a marine in World War II in First Marine Division in Okinawa and Tinian. He learned his printing trade after the war on the GI Bill. He began printing in Mount Pleasant and Belding before coming to Saranac in 1959. H purchased the Saranac Advertiser in 1958 and operated it until the last edition in 1970. In 1968, he had the idea of starting a classified ad newspaper, The Ionia County Shoppers Guide, which he owned and operated until 1990. Brownie was a member and past commander of the Saranac American Legion, member of the Saranac VFW, Masonic Lodge, Cooties and also was instrumental in founding the Historical Color Guard. He was a past Ionia County commissioner and past chairman of the board of commissioners. He enjoyed antique cars, woodworking and his family. He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Tom Avery; brother, Bill; and sister, Ruth Fitzgerald. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Phyllis Brown; sons, Roger and Terese Brown of Florida Keys, Fla., Ed and Deb Brown of Ionia, John and Frances Brown of Saranac; daughters, Cathy Avery of Saranac, Shirley and Gary Christiansen of McBride; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services were today at Lake Funeral Home, Ionia, with the Rev. Ken Harger officiating. Interment was in Saranac Cemetery.
