Clarence W. Browning, 96, died Monday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Merle 
Kelly of rural Portland.  Mr. Browning spent most of his life in the Portland 
area where he operated a farm for many years.  He specialized in raising 
poultry and exhibited at state and national poultry shows.  For a number of 
years he opened his home as a summer hotel.

Mr. Browning was born in Illinois January 6, 1865, and came to the Portland 
area early in life.  He had been a member of the Portland Baptist church 72 
years.  On his 96th birthday Mr. Browning received a greeting care from 
President Eisenhower.

Surviving are his wife, Rose; three daughters, Mrs. Harriet Kelly of Portland; 
principal of Ionia junior high school, Mrs. Elizabeth Simmons and Mrs. 
Florence Dunham of East Lansing; a son, Clarence O. Browning of Grand Ledge, 
eight grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Funeral service will be at Neller funeral home Friday at 1:30 .m. with Rev. 
Robert Treat officiating.  Interment will be in at Portland cemetery.
