Buck, Whose Death Occurred Wednesday, Was Oldest of City’s Former Business Men. Thomas R. Buck, 77, for a long time closely identified with the mercantile life of Ionia, but of recent years retired from active business, died Wednesday afternoon at his apartment on Rich street. Mr. Buck was born in Corry, Pa., June 8, 1856. He came to Ionia at the age of eight and had been a resident here since. For many years he clerked for the J.L. Hudson clothing company in Ionia, successors to R. Hudson & Sons, later going to Cleveland O., where he took a course in merchant tailor cutting. In1886 Mr. Buck and J.T. Webber formed the partnership of Webber & Buck, clothiers and men’s furnishings. This organization prospered and continued for ten years, during the time being the largest clothing concern in this locality. At the end of ten years the firm of Webber & Buck was dissolved, Mr. Buck going into business for himself. He continued a leader in the men’s clothing business until the fire of 1919, which damaged the store and stock of Mr. Buck. The remaining stock was taken over by Harold Hiler, who at that time clerked for Mr. Buck. At the time of his death Mr. Buck was the oldest living of Ionia’s prominent merchants of former years. His son, Foster, who died at the age of 34 years in 1919, had been associated with his father in the business form the time he left school up to the time of his death. Mr. Buck leaves his widow, who was formerly Lenna E. Foster, of Grand Rapids; one brother, Philip in Kansas, and a sister in Detroit. At the time of his death they were living in the Whitney apartments, corner of Rich and Lafayette streets, having moved there from the beautiful home which they built on Washington street, now owned by Mr. and Mrs. Harry Warner. For many years they had been spending their winters at Long Beach, Cal. He was a member of the B.P.O.E. and in his passing the Elks lose a valued fraternal brother and the city a respected citizen. The funeral services will be conducted at the home of Mr. and Mrs. F.A. Tower, 240 Lafayette street, Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock. The burial will be in the Highland Park cemetery. Members of the Elks lodge and friends wishing to view the remains may do so by calling at the Boynton funeral chapel up to Friday noon.
