The boy, it is said, was opposed to attending school and did the rash act because his parents made this compulsory. Another story is that the lad had been scolded because he missed a train, after which he was sent for the cow. On returning he asked for the rope, the father supposing he wanted to tie the cow. The boy went into the barn, tied one end above him, the other around his neck, stood on a nail keg, then kicked the keg from under him when all was ready. He hung there an hour before the boy was discovered by the father. The Bugbee’s live near Collins and work F. C. Miller’s farm. Six years ago Lewis was thrown from a horse and struck upon his head, and at that time the physicians said the fall produced concussion of the brain. Nothing was thought of it by his father, for the boy seemed to be like other boys; but since the tragedy it has occurred to the parents that he said strange things and performed strange acts.
