Bullen, 83, died Monday, Jan. 11, 1999. He was born Oct. 13, 1915, in Mason, the son of Herman and Jessie (Haynes) Bullen. Mr. Bullen was a 1935 graduate of Mason High School. He received his bachelors degree from Michigan State College in 1940, and his master's degree in 1959. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy for two years. Mr. Bullen retired from teaching in 1875. He taught three years in Unionville and 28 years at Portland Public Schools. Mr. Bullen coached baseball, basketball and golf and under his guidance a strong FFA Program developed in Portland, bringing many awards to local youth. Members of his FFA teams were named State Farmers 43 times, American Farmers four times, and they received nine state awards. Mr. Bullen served as superintendent of the FFA department at the Ionia Free Fair for more than ten years and as president of the Michigan Association of Vocational Agriculture and the Portland Education Association. Two exceptional highlights in his career included teaching in Ethiopia during the summer of 1971 and in Nepal during the summer of 1972 through the National Education Association Teach Corp Program. His other interests were bee keeping and working as an usher for 17 years in the handicapped section of Marchant Stadium, the Detroit Tigers winter home. Mr. Bullen was a member of the Portland United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Bettie T. in 1949; wife, Vern M. in 1996; two brothers, Dr. Robert E. Bullen and James C. Bullen; and a son, Barry Lee Bullen in 1954. Surviving are his five children, Roger C. (Marylou) Bullen and Craig Bullen, both of Portland, Laurie (Kamal) Jarrah of Lakeland, Fla., Kathie (Ralph) Showerman of Frankenmuth, and John (Sharon) Chidester of Boone, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 14, at the Portland United Methodist Church, 310 E. Bridge St., Portland, with the Rev. Scott K. Otis, Pastor, officiating. The family will receive friends at the Gorsline-Runciman Co. Neller Chapel, 210 E. Bridge St., Portland, today from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m., and at the church on Thursday, one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Portland United Methodist church.
