Burgess, son of Filo and Margaret Burgess, was born in Woodland June 17, 1892 and died in Odessa May 13, 1912 aged 19 years, 10 mons. and 26 days. He was converted early in life and joined the U.B. church at Woodland, since which time he has been a faithful follower of his Creator. He was of a very kind and loving nature, and made many friends. The greater part of his life was spent near the place of his birth. He attended High School there going as far as the tenth grade. In the summer of 1911 he moved with his mother to this place, and was taken with a severe cold which finally developed into tuberculosis of the lungs. Altho everything was done for him the ravages of the disease had such a stronghold that he passed away Monday morning. When it was evident that he must die, he expressed himself as ready and wanting to go. He leaves to mourn his departure a mother, one sister, Mrs. Bertha Leslie of Lapeer; two brothers, Filo and Lawrence and a host of friends. The funeral was held Wednesday at the Carr church, Rev. F. B. Parker of Woodland officiating. The bearers were chosen from among his young friends being Alvin and Vern Koutz, Arva Dillenbeck, Emil Hackett, Frank Beckhold and Archie Watkins. The honorary bearers were Pearl and Lula Koutz, Hattie Eldridge, Sadie Fox, Reva Watkins and Edith Beckhold. Those from away in attendance at the funeral were, Mrs. Sarah Howe and daughter of Nashville and Mrs. Leonard and daughter of Woodland.
