Aug. 13, 2013 William A. Burgtorf, 93, of Ionia, passed away on Friday, Aug. 9, 2013. He was born on Aug. 10, 1919 in Cheboygan, Mich., the son of August and Frances (Rands) Burgtorf. Mr. Burgtorf was a veteran of the U.S. Army, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge, and received the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. William was a lifelong farmer in Ronald Township, worked for Electrolux in Belding for 40 years, and raised three families along the way. He was a lifetime member of the Sheridan V.F.W. Post, as well as a member of the Cooties. William was a member of the local Coffee Clutch in Ionia, enjoyed going to his property Up North, hunting, and was known as a great storyteller, weaving many tales. He proudly made a commitment to Christ the day before he died. Preceding him in death were his wife, Lillian Burgtorf; son, Robert Burgtorf; Siblings, Emma Goodell, Tommie Burgtorf, Robert Burgtorf, Richard Burgtorf, Aletha Miller and Jack Burgtorf. Surviving are his son, Gerald (Carol) Burgtorf of Fowler; daughter, Patricia Mull of Greenville; special granddaughters he raised, Loretta (Bruce) Shindorf of Stanton, and Darla Hill of Greenville; daughter-in-law, Shirley Burgtorf; 20 grandchildren and many great grandchildren; and brother, George (Evelyn) Burgtorf of Saranac. The Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2013 at Lehman Funeral Homes, 220 Rich St., Ionia, with the Rev. Kenneth Harger, Pastor of Shilog Community Church presiding. Interment will take place at Woodard Lake Cemetery, with Military Honors provided by the Sheridan V.F.W. Post. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
