Burhans, years ago a resident of Portland and a former banker and school administrator here. Mr. Burhans died Saturday morning in a Lansing hospital, after having suffered a stroke at his home the day previous. Burial was in that city. In the early days of the Maynard-Allen State Bank Mr. Burhans was cashier of the institution, and was also long a member of the school board of district No. 3, Portland. His wife, who survives, is the former Cora Summer of Pewamo. In 1914, Mr. Burhans went to Lansing, and was with a hardware firm as treasurer. Some years later he became associated with Mill Mutuals insurance agency, and continued in that field of work until his retirement in 1940. He was 84 years of age and was born and raised in Ionia County. At one time, when a young man, Mr. Burhans was secretary to William Jennings Bryan. Surviving besides the widow, are three sons, Dr. Ernest Burhans, Peoria Ill,; Dr. Robert Burhans, Lansing, and Gene Burhans, an official of Weissinger Paper Co., Lansing; one daughter, Mrs. D. M. Seeley, of Pittsburgh, Pa. There are also nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Dr. Levi Burhans, of Peoria, Ill., also years ago a Portland resident, and school teacher and county school commissioner here, is a brother of deceased. Mr. Burhans was a high-ranking member of the Masonic order, being a life member of Lansing Lodge No. 33, F. & A. M., and a member of Capital Chapter No. 9 R.A.M.; Lansing Council No. 29, R & A.M.; Lansing Commandery No. 25, Knights Templar, and DeWitt Clinton consistory. He also was a member of Central Methodist church.
