The Ionia Standard, Friday, November 13, 1885

Our citizens were surprised and shocked on Saturday evening at the report of 
the death of W. P. Burhans who died very suddenly at his residence at 7:15.  
He had been about his business as usual through the day and was down town at 
five o’clock.  The death resulted from neuralgia of the heart.  The funeral 
services were held yesterday afternoon at the Presbyterian church, being 
conducted by Rev. W. S. Potter, assisted by Rev. J. Pierson, D.D.  There was a 
very large attendance.  Mr. Burhans was one of Ionia’s most prominent citizens 
and will be missed in many ways and especially by the business community.  We 
print elsewhere an obituary notice.

The city banks were all closed yesterday during the funeral of the late Mr. 
Burhans.
