With Mrs. Burhans at the time of her death was her daughter, Mrs. Willis Vandevanter, who arrived here a short time ago from her home in Washington, D.C., to be with her mother. Mrs. Burhans had been enjoying exceptionally good health, being especially since her daughter, Mrs. Willis Vandervanter, of Washington, D.C., had come to visit her two weeks ago. Mrs. Burhans was taken ill Sunday at the dinner table, and spent the rest of the day in bed, but on Monday morning was able to enjoy an automobile ride, but it was necessary for her to be put in bed upon her return, to which she has been confined since. Mrs. Burhans would have celebrated her 91st birthday anniversary on the 15th of July. Last March and in April she had a serious illness from which it is probable she never recovered. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Willis Vandervanter. Mrs. Burhans is the widow of Winslow P. Burhans, who was born in Albany county, N.Y. Mr. Burhans was married in 1857 to Rachel A. Dorman, who was born in Albany, New York, July 15, 1831. She was the youngest of the six children of Daniel and Cornelia Dorman. Daniel Dorman was for years a well-known merchant in Albany. In their later years he and his wife removed to Ionia, where they spent a couple of years, later going to Illinois, where Mr. Dorman died. To Winslow P. and Rachel Burhans three children were born, “Dolly,” Winslow, who died unmarried at the age of 25 years. On October, 1883 “Dolly” Burhans was married to Willis Vandervanter, of Marion, Ind., who later moved to Wyoming, where he became chief justice of the supreme court of that state, later United States circuit judge for the eighth judicial circuit, and who on December 16, 1910, was appointed justice of the United States supreme court, now living in Washington, D.C. Mr. and Mrs. Vandevanter have two sons, Isaac B. and Winslow Page Burhans, of Washington, D.C. Mrs. Burhans was a member of the Presbyterian church, but for a number of years has been interested in Christian Science. Mr. Vandevanter is at their summer home in Georgian Bay, Ontario. Funeral arrangements will be announced later. ------------ The funeral for Mrs. Rachel Burhans, known as Ionia county’s wealthiest woman, was held from the late residence on North Rich street, Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Rev. Harry E. Porter, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, conducted the service. The bearers at the service were Dr. F.M. Marsh, T.B. Preston, Hon. Montgomery Webster, W.B. Heath, H. Van Allen and Fred Cutler, Jr. The music was furnished by Mrs. Thane Benedict and Mrs. Moris Phelps. Burial took place in Highland Park cemetery. Mrs. Burhans is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Willis Vandevanter and two grandsons who reside in Washington, D.C. Justice Vandevanter was here from his summer home in Georgia Bay for the funeral.
