Burke, 84, of 408 Division St., died Saturday afternoon in Ionia County Memorial Hospital. On his retirement July 1, 1972, he had been an employee of the Sentinel-Standard for fifty years, as printer, pressman, linotype operator, compositor and make-up man, and as mechanical superintendent. Born Feb. 23, 1897, in Ionia, he was the son of John and Elisabeth Heinz Burke. After attending Ionia High School, he became an apprentice in the old Standard shop. After acquiring a trade, he moved to Chicago where he was employed as a printer for two years when he returned to Ionia. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I, stationed at Ft. Custer. He joined the Sentinel-Standard “either in 1921 or 1922,” and remained in its employ until his retirement at 75 in 1972. He was married Dec. 11, 1937, in Ionia to Theresa Sarley, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, John of Pekin, Ill, H. Dennis of Marion, Ohio, and Terry Barker of Greenville. Four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive, as does a sister, Mrs. Margaret Vreeland of Battle Creek. He was a member of the Girard-Horrocks Post of the American Legion in Ionia and was an honorary life member of Ionia Elks. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. from the Leddick Funeral Home, the Rev. Henry Dondzila officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. The family will be at the funeral home Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.. A memorial has been established for the American Cancer Society, in the care of the funeral home.
