Henry Burleigh died this morning at 3 o’clock. He was a peculiar character. With a remarkable love for military duty, and an apitude that made him specially efficient in the service, he combined a seemingly irresistible tendency to over-indulgence in intoxicants, that marred his general reputation, and was doubtless really the cause of his ill-fortune and untimely death. He was for ten years a member of the Co. G, 2nd regiment state troops, serving a large part of the time as duty sergeant, and his efficiency was really remarkable. Col. Mitchell says of him: “He was one of the best non-com officers I ever knew,” and tells many instances where his judgment as to line of duty, and his control of men, of high social and business standing, was almost marvelous. He very much desired to go to the Cuban war; but the military board would not permit his enlistment, and he followed the regiment to which the Ionia company belonged, and participated in the campaign from this independent footing. Laster he enlisted in Co. C.3d regt U.S. Vols., and saw service in the Philippines until the regiment was discharged. Since his return, his health has been very poor, and he was granted entrance to the State Soldiers’ Home. Life there was not agreeable to him, and it is said he only staid one night. Family and soldier friends have taken an interest in his welfare, and he will be given a burial worthy a good soldier. The funeral service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal church, on Monday morning at 10 o’clock, and it is expected the Spanish War Veterans will provide the pall bearers from their ranks. ------------ The funeral of Henry Burleigh was well attended especially by his old comrades in arms, at St. John’s Episcopal church this morning. The service was by Rev. D. Mendenhall. The S.W.V. attended in a body, under command of Lieut. Haryey; and the bearers selected from their ranks were: Frank Cheney, Bert Haight, Otto Zanders and Fred Catts. Interment at Highland park, and a firing squad paid the usual military honors.
