Burnett, 82, an Ionia businessman for well over 50 years, died early Sunday morning at Ionia County Memorial hospital. He had been a patient there two weeks. Besides conducting his insurance and real estate business he was active in civic and fraternal affairs and was an ardent sportsman. He resided for many years at 322 East Washington street. Born in Jackson, March 22, 1879 the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Burnett he came to Ionia while a young man of about 20 years of age. On June 1, 1905 he was married to June Smith of Ionia, who died October 16, 1944. He conducted the A.M. Burnett insurance and real estate business for many years. The past several years he has been in partnership with Vernon Shotwell and the firm has been known as Burnett-Shotwell. Besides his business interests he clerked at most of the auction sales held in this area for more than 30 years. He was also manager of the Ionia Cooperative Oil Co. for several years in the 1920s, a firm which distributed gasoline and other petroleum products. Although a newcomer to Ionia he immediately became interested in independent baseball and managed a team several years. He was also active in the early days of the organization of the Ionia Free Fair. He continued his sports activities for many years and made annual trips into Michigan’s Upper Peninsula hunting deer and trout fishing. He was one of the early organizers of the Ionia Country club and continued golfing until two years ago. He was a charter member of the Ionia Fishing and Hunting club, secretary of Moose lodge for many years, member of Knights of Pythias and life member of Ionia Elks lodge. His church activities included being a member of St. Johns Episcopal congregation where he served as vestryman for several years. Surviving are a daughter, Josephine, at home; two brothers, Nathan of Parma and Lawrence of Jackson; two sisters, Mrs. Edward Finney and Frances Burnett of Detroit; several nieces and nephews. The body will be at the family home at 322 East Washington street until 11 o’clock Wednesday morning. Funeral service will be at St. Johns Episcopal church at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. Rev. Fr. Raymond Bierlein will officiate and interment will be at Oak Hill cemetery. Funeral arrangements are being made by Phelps funeral chapel and a memorial will be established for the St. Johns Episcopal church.
