Burns, of North Plains, who died at his home there Saturday was held Sunday morning from the residence at 10 o’clock and from the Baptist church in Palo Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Mr. Burns leaves a widow and several children, all of whom are grown. Armour Burns of Ionia is a son. He was 68 years of age and had been ill for some time with cancer. ---- James H. Burns, one of family of eight children, was born in Kalamazoo Dec. 2, 1844. When two years of age his parents moved to Lyons, where he lived until 1862, when he enlisted in Company I, first U.S. sharpshooters, Feb. 15 of that year, serving about one year, when on account of physical disability, he was discharged at Philadelphia, Pa., Jan. 12, 1863. December 30 of the same year he re-entered the service, enlisting in Company L of the fourth cavalry and served until the end of war being mustered out at Detroit Sept. 14, 1865. Following the was he engaged in carpentry work, laboring in different parts of the country. When about 30 years of age he went to Pennsylvania. Here he became acquainted with and married Miss Rebecca H. Fenton of Bucks county, Pa., March 11, 1875. After nearly two years spent in Pennsylvania, they moved to Michigan, settling in Lyons where they remained four years, the following years being spent in different parts of Ionia county. Eleven children came to ¬¬¬[missing word] their home, six boys and five girls, Walter S., of Northport, B. Jay [missing words] _¬lice, James William, Armo¬__ [missing word] (deceased), Nellie, Lizzie, ¬¬-[missing word] L., Reva E. and Harry A. In the year 1900 …[missing words]… his heart to the Savior and united with the Palo Baptist Church, remaining a member until his death which occurred at [missing word] o’clock Thursday evening, [missing words]. He leaves to mourn his departure his bereaved widow, [missing word] children mention above, two sisters, [missing word] Trefy, of California and [missing word] _ongwell, of Ionia, a large number of nephews and nieces, several grandchildren and many friends. Funeral services were held at the Palo Baptist church Sunday afternoon, June 1, 1913, at two o’clock, conducted by the pastor, __. B. Buffum, the church being packed to the doors, showing the esteem in which the deceased was held. Interment was made in Palo cemetery.
