Burns, for many years prominent in Michigan Maccabee circles, and a great commander of the Lady Maccabees, and later honorary supreme commander and assistant supreme commander of the order after its merger with the Maccabees, will be buried Tuesday afternoon, following services at 2 p.m. in Emmanuel Episcopal church, St. Louis. Mrs. Burns died Friday at her home in the Palmetto hotel, in Detroit, and her body will lie in state in St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral, Woodward and Hancock avenues, Detroit, until 2 p.m. Monday when services were to be held there, followed by the Tuesday service in her home city, St. Louis. Mrs. Burns was born Frances Sanford, in Ionia, May 2, 1866, the daughter of Ionia pioneers. She taught school in St. Louis, and married the late John Burns in 1887. In 1928 she went to Detroit to live. Mrs. Burns had charge of the Frances E. Burns old age home for ladies at Alma and the hospitalization work of the Maccabees until her death. She was a member of the Women’s Press association of Michigan and past president of the Michigan federation of women’s clubs. She had been president of the Michigan Fraternal congress, the first woman to be elected president of any fraternal congress. She had been recording secretary of the National Fraternal congress and president of the president’s section of the national congress. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Peter Russ, a son, Robert S. Burns; a sister, Mrs. Adelaide Hughes of Flint; a brother, William Sanford of Gillespie, Ill.; seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
