Merl “Barney” Burns, 93, of Ionia died August 3, 1997 at his home.  He was 
born on July 19, 1904, the son of Henry and Evadna Burns.

He worked for 50 years for the Ionia County Road Commission.  He married 
Magreta Cory on November 4, 1924 and they were married for 70 years.  He was 
an avid fisherman.

He is survived by two daughters, Merleta (Clinton) Antcliff of Saranac and 
Leora Listerman of Ionia; one daughter-in-law, Pat Burns of Orleans; eight 
grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; and one former daughter-in-law, 
Shirley Rusnell of Ionia.  

He was preceded in death by his wife, Magreta, on June 25, 1995; one son, 
Gordon, on October 4, 1995; one granddaughter, Cheryl Lynn in 1975; and one 
brother and one sister.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday from the Cook Funeral Home 
in Ionia with Rev. Kenneth Harger of Shiloh Community Church officiating.  
Interment will be in Easton Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 
p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Rich St. Chapel of Cook 
Funeral Home in Ionia.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Ionia County 
Commission on Aging, Meals and Wheels program.
