Gene D. Burns, 76, of Belding, passed away Wednesday morning, September 1, 
2004, at Spectrum Health United Memorial Campus in Greenville.  Gene was born 
January 7, 1928 in Grand Rapids, the son of Vernon and Mabel Long Burns.

Gene worked for Extruded Metals and Extruded Aluminum for more than 40 years 
retiring in 1990.  He was a member of the UAW Union Local #4.  He loved playing 
softball and was an excellent pitcher while playing on several area teams.

He enjoyed bowling and was encouraged to become a professional bowler in his 
earlier years.

Gene was a long time resident of Belding and was fondly known as “The Mayor” of 
Belding.  He enjoyed spending time with his many friends.

He is survived by his children, Gene V. and Paula Burns of Ionia and Mabel and 
Eddie Simon of Dallas, Tex.  He is also survived by his grandchildren, Susan 
Simon, Jennifer Simon, Cara and Brian Bruining, Janice and Ed Abshagen, seven 
great-grandchildren, and special friend, Frieda Mosher of Belding.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Ivan, Clyde, Jack and 
Art; sisters, Winnie, Lorraine, Edith, and one grandson, Jerry Simon.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, 
Belding, with Pastor Gary Jacobsen of Holy Cross Lutheran Church officiating.  
Burial will be in Greene Cemetery.  Visitation will be Saturday from 2 p.m. to 
4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.  Memorial contributions 
may be given to Holy Cross Lutheran Church or Visiting Nurse Hospice.
