Hedwig was born March 26, 1920, in Ludwigshafen am Rhein, Germany, the daughter of August and Katharine Massar Muhlhauber. Hedwig lived her youthful years during World War II in Germany and met her loving husband there in Dieburg in 1946. After 11 months of hard work getting her to America, she wedded Arthur “Art” Burns on March 20, 1948 in Belding. After arriving in America, she had to teach herself how to read, write and speak English, and loved to learn along with her children as they attended school. Gilbert, her son, was an excellent teacher. She loved to listen to the radio, dancing and singing along to the melodies. She taught her children how to dance since she had enjoyed it so growing up. Hedwig worked very hard in her yard, staying out late at night grooming it to perfection. The Belding Garden Club awarded her for having the most beautiful yard and on Saturday evening people would drive by slowly to view her gardens. She had several German friends that she would visit with on the phone every day. Many neighbors would come by for coffee and ask advice as they visited for hours in her kitchen. Hedwig loved to watch her cooking shows and cook for her family, using generous portions of her German favorites – butter and cream. You would not have wanted to be on a diet when you would come for a meal. But nothing was more important to her than her family. She would anxiously wait for her daughter, Kathy, to come home from school to sit down in the kitchen with cookies and milk and hear about her day. She loved her one and only granddaughter, Kimberly, beyond words. Whenever she would come to visit Kathy and Kimberly, she would make Art stop at the gas station and pick up her granddaughter’s favorite candy bar. She was a fine Christian woman and loved to sing the Lord’s Prayer in German in her beautiful soprano voice. In 2002, she moved with Art to Traverse City and later lived at the Grand Traverse Pavilions where she would always have kisses ready for her caregivers and tell them she loved them. She loved to pass candy out to the visiting children there at Halloween. Hedwig’s handprint will always remain there. Hedwig had the biggest heart, touching so many lives that the names are too numerous to list. She will be truly missed by her family and friends. Hedwig was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Albert, killed in action in Russia during World War II. She is survived by her husband, Arthur; their children, Gilbert and Marilyn Burns of Moscow, Idaho, Kathy and Fred Doelker of Traverse City, and granddaughter, Kimberly Burns of Traverse City; sister, Gustel Seitz of Germany; nephew, Albert and Traudel Seitz, and great-niece, Elka Seitz, all of Germany. Funeral services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding, with Pastor Ken Harger of Shiloh Community Church officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Memory Gardens, Belding. The family will greet relatives and friends one hour prior to the service Tuesday. Memorial contributions may be given to the Belding Gardeners and Grand Traverse Pavilions.
