March 12,1903 Another pioneer gone from our midst, another old soldier mustered from the ranks. Malachi Burns was born in Macomb County, Mich., June 9, 1826, and departed from this life March 7, 1903. He died at his home in Lake Odessa, at the age of sixty-seven years; He came with his parents to Berlin Township Ionia Co., in 1853. Was married to Miss Phila Anway Oct. 23, 1859, and with his young wife settled in West Odessa, where they made them selves a home, and where they have lived most of the time since, as they only moved to Lake Odessa about one year previous to his death. They were but few in Odessa who could tell as well as this man the experiences of those old pioneer days, were they made their home in the almost trackless wilderness-he who made his home in Ionia county for over half a century, he who helped to change the primeval forest to the blossoming gardens, he who had seen the Indian trails crossed by railroads, and who had seen the slow mail coach give way to telegraph and telephone lines. He served three years in the civil war, enlisting in August, 1861, in the 21st Michigan Infantry, and was one of the heroes who marched with Sherman from Atlanta to the sea. And although after he returned to his home from the war he found his health much broken down, he showed the same untiring energy, and continued the work he had left, changing his forest land into a beautiful, prosperous farm and home. Although he was not so aged, he was in a feeble state of health for some years, his death came very sudden, but was not unexpected, as he had been confined to his home for several months. The old pioneers, as well as the old soldiers, are leaving us one by one. He was a good, kind neighbor, and a faithful soldier. Lot of us all remember his kindness gratefully, and say of the husband, father, brother, comrade, Rest in Peace! The deceased leaves a wife, three daughters and four grandchildren to mourn his loss. The funeral was held at the M.E.Church on Sunday afternoon, Rev. Wilcox officiating. Beautiful and appropriate music was rendered by the choir. The funeral was largely attended.
