JOSEPH): SENTINEL-STANDARD, Ionia, MI, Wednesday, February 9, 2000: "Obituaries - Eva Burns, 98, of Hubbardston, died peacefully at home Monday, Feb. 7, 2000. She was born Nov. 28, 1901, the ninth child of John and Maria (Rooney) Welch. Due to frail health, Eva was home-schooled until age 9, when she was enrolled in fourth grade at St. John the Baptist Catholic School. She graduated in 1920, enrolled in Ionia County Normal Training School and graduated with her teaching certificate in 1922. For two years she taught all eight grades at Schafer School in rural Muir. She married Joseph Burns on Aug. 5, 1924, and they had seven children: Raymond (Betty) Burns of Gladstone, Ore., Patrick (Florence) Burns of Hubbardston, Joanne (Bud) Howard of Sheridan, John (Shirley) Burns of Dimondale, Terry (Mary Ellen) Burns of Lansing, Charlene (Bernard) Ward of Hubbardston and Katie (Bob) Cashen of Hubbardston. She also has 27 grandchildren and 45 great-grandchildren. Eva was active in all parish activities at St. John the Baptist Church. She was also a long-time member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 182 in Hubbardston. We remember her as an avid sports fan and a euchre player, right up to her last weeks. She was a friend to everyone, especially young people. She never had a bad thing to say about anyone. If someone stepped out of line and she was told about it, she would say, "The Great God save us!" For the better part of 20 years, she and her brother George, a nurse, cared for terminally ill family members without compensation. Eva was married to Joe for 72 years when he died in 1996 at the age of 96. She was also preceded in death by two grandchildren, Charles and Linda Burns; five brothers, Patrick, Matt, William, George, and Jack Welch; three sisters, Loretta Welch, Maggie Dailey and Marie McCrackin. We owe special thanks to our "earth angels", Charlene Ward, Kitty Burns and Russ Howard, for their comforting and compassionate care. Funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Hubbardston, with Fr. William Reitz officiating. Interment will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery. Visitation is today from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Lux and Schnepp Funeral Home, Carson City, and from 9 a.m. until the time of service Thursday at the church. A rosary service will be held tonight at 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John the Baptist Church."
