Burrows, 100, died at 4 a.m. Sunday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Florence Moore, 606 West Lincoln avenue. He was born in Athens, Ontario, Canada January 5, 1856 and was a son of Daniel and Sarah Burrows, one of a family of 13. At the age of 16 he came to Grand Rapids which was a small village at that time, and was employed by a John M. Schaffer, a fruit grower. He worked there two years before returning to Canada for a short time. Later Mr. Burrows traveled by freight train to Drayton, North Dakota and in 1887 was married to Margaret A. Flath of Canada, who traveled to North Dakota. Mrs. Burrows was one of a family of 12. They resided in North Dakota until 1903 and Mrs. Burrows died in 1936, three years after they returned to Michigan. At the time of her death they resided on a 63 acre farm, in present North Jefferson street. A short time later he sold his farm to Harry Stauffer. A member of the Zion Evangelical United Brethren church, he was the oldest member of the church. Surviving are his daughter, Mrs. Florence Moore, four grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Friends and relatives will be received at the Stone-Kauffman funeral home until noon Tuesday when the body will be removed to the Zion Evangelical United Brethren church. Services will be conducted at the church at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon by the Rev. John Price who will be assisted by the Rev. A. R. Kuehn. Interment will be at Highland park cemetery. Subsequent Publication: Wednesday, October 17, 1956 Funeral services for Ionia’s centenarian, Charles J. Burrows, who died Sunday were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 at the Zion Evangelical United Brethren church with the Rev. John Price officiating. He was assisted by the Rev. A. R. Kuehn and the organist was Mrs. Orin Schmidt. Interment was in Highland Park cemetery. Bearers were Fred Martin, Royce Waters, Thomas Westbrook, John Case, Harry Martin and Delbert Lemke. Attending from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. John Case and Sharon, Trude, Lindsay and Rochelle of Fennville; Mrs. Marion Stutes of Lansing; Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Morris of Lowell and Mrs. Vera Curtiss of Grand Rapids.
