Burt died suddenly of apoplexy Friday evening. He came home about 9 o’clock and passed through the house out of the back door. Mrs. Burt, who is still crippled from her bad accident of last winter, was lying on the lounge, and dropped asleep soon after he came in, and did not awake until about 11, and was then startled and frightened to find that he had not come in. She had not yet been out of doors since her injury, but with the aid of her crutches she made her way out, and found the dead body of her husband, resting partly in an outhouse, from which he had fallen forward on his face and apparently died without struggle. Mr. Burt’s age was 58. He came to Ionia on the first engine that came in on the Ionia & Lansing (now D.G.R&W.) railroad and has since been a resident. For several years he had the contract for handling the coal for that company’s own use, but lost the job on an underbid three or four years ago, and has not since been in any regular business. He was an honorable citizen of good repute, and stood high in Masonic circles, being W. M. of Ionia lodge last year, and filling other responsible positions. The funeral services for Nelson T. Burt were quite largely attended at his late residence, corner of West Main and Yeomans streets, Tuesday p.m. The service here was by Rev. Edward M. Jeffers, of the Baptist church. Burial was in Highland Park and in the funeral procession was an escort of fifteen members of Wm. H. Borden post G.A.R. and 44 brother fraters from Ionia Lodge No. 36, F.&A.M., of which body he was a past master, filling that position for the yearly term during 1896.
