Ionia Standard, 6 Aug 1895

Mrs. Harriet Burton died at Grand Rapids Thursday, from burns received on 
Tuesday, when a newspaper slipped from her lap and caught fire in the grate, 
communicating with her clothing, and causing burns from the shock of which she 
was not able to rally at her advanced age.  Harriet was a daughter of Joel 
Guild, who was a member of the original Dexter colony that settled Ionia in 
1833.  She was 20 years old at that time, being the eldest child of the 
family.  The Guilds made only a brief stay at Ionia, going to Grand Rapids, 
where deceased has long been honored as the city’s oldest pioneer, and loved 
for her excellent traits of character.
