To them were born nine children, two sons dying in infancy and one daughter at the age of twelve years. He came to Michigan with his parents at the age of one and one-half years, and settled in Brace township, Macomb Co., later moving to Oakland Co. He came to Ionia county immediately after his marriage, and settled in the wilderness of Campbell, on what is known as the Christian Walter farm, residing there about fourteen years. In 1866, he came to the home farm in Odessa, where he passed the remainder of his life. His last illness, which extended over the past year, caused intense suffering, and death came as a welcome release. He leaves to mourn his loss a wife, four sons, two daughters and a large circle of friends. One of the pioneers of Ionia county, he lived to see an almost unbroken forest transformed into prosperous farms and pleasant villages. He was a kind, affectionate husband and father, a staunch friend and a good neighbor, a strictly honest man, whose heart and hand were always open to cheer and assist those around him. his name was a synonym of kindness and charity, and on every hand is heard reminiscences of his good words and deeds. It has been said that a favor was never asked of him in vain. The large gathering of both old and young, who came to pay a last sad tribute to his memory, testified to the respect and esteem in which he was held. The funeral was held at his late residence, on Sunday, December 4. Rev. Bu?h, pastor of the Congregational church at Clarksville, officiated. His remains were laid to rest in the Clarksville cemetery.
