Montcalm county deputies said the body was that of Roger Butcher, of Saranac, who with three others had been staying at the cottage of the parents of one of the four at West Lake. According to the Montcalm officers the four decided to take a boat ride at 1:45 am Wednesday but the boat capsized in the lake. Officers said Butcher decided to swim to shore for help but became exhausted and sank. The three others remained with the boat and were rescued. They were Dale Courter, 18, and Jerry Veltman, no age, both of Saranac; and Paul Luna, no age, of Clarksville route 1. Montcalm county officers said they received a call about the accident about 4 am Wednesday. The body of Butcher was found during dragging operations at 12:24 pm Wednesday. Funeral services will be held at Morris Roetman funeral home in Saranac at 2 pm, October 6. Born in Ionia January 25, 1950, Roger was the son of Mr and Mrs Thane Butcher. He was a 1969 graduate of Saranac high school where he excelled in sports and named to all-conference groups for a couple of years. He served in Germany with United States army during the Vietnam conflict. Surviving is his wife, the former Donna Golombisky, to whom he was married July 19, 1969 in Saranac. Other survivors include his parents, Mr and Mrs Thane Butcher; a brother Carl of Ionia; three sisters, Carol Chipman of Saranac, Sharon Prosser of Greenville and Joy Hopple of Eaton Rapids. The body will be at the funeral home Thursday and Friday from 2 pm to 4 pm and from 7 to 9 pm. Rev. James Frank of Galilee Baptist church will officiate at funeral services. Burial will be at Saranac cemetery.
