Duane was born Oct. 31, 1932 in Grand Rapids the son of Fred and Grace Weitz Butcher. He graduated from Saranac High School with the class of 1950 and proudly served as a corporal in the US Army during the Korean War. Duane was a member of the American Legion Post 175 in Saranac. In earlier years he played catcher for the Detroit Tigers Minor League team. Duane loved to play cards and enjoyed winters in Texas. On Aug. 3, 1990, he was married to Joy Roberts and she survives along with his children, Durenda (Chris) Roberts, Tracy (Saul) Salgoda and Duane "Butch" Butcher all of Saranac; his stepchildren, Brenton (Linda) Roberts of Saranac, Vickie (Mark) Barker of Muir and Eugene (Aica) Roberts of Cedar City, Utah. Duane is also survived by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his brother, David (Mary) Butcher of Traverse City and sister Sandra (Jim) Reynolds of Saranac. Duane was preceded by his parents and one brother, Larry Butcher. In keeping with his wishes, no visitation will be held. Private graveside services will take place in Saranac Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Care and service were entrusted to Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Belding.
