Butler, one of Danby’s best known residents, died at his home south of Frost corners Saturday morning, after an illness of several weeks. Mr. Butler had been confined to his bed since Thanksgiving day. Last winter, while at his winter home in Dunedin, Fla., he suffered a light stroke, but had been able to get about until his final illness. Mr. Butler was born in Grand Rapids 74 years ago. He was left an orphan at the age of eight and came to Portland to live with the family of William Martin. Mrs. Martin, mother of Carrie and Hannah Martin, was an aunt of Mr. Butler. He attended school in Portland, and later went old M.A.C. in East Lansing for a year. He taught school after that and then attended Ypsilanti Normal. March 1, 1893, he was married to Miss Nellie Wilcox, who survives. Immediately following their marriage they began housekeeping on the farm where Mr. Butler died, having spent all of their married life there. Mr. Butler was at one time nationally known as a breeder of Poland China hogs. He was at one time president of the state organization of Poland China breeders. He had also served as present of Ionia County Farm Bureau. For many years he was interested in politics, township, state and national, and was a staunch republican leader in his township. Surviving, besides the widow, is one daughter, Mrs. George Pitchford, and one son, Hammer Butler, of Danby. There are 10 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. There is also one sister, Mrs. Della Chapin, who lives in Ohio. Funeral services were held at Bandfield Funeral home on Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Robert Reynhout, of Portland Baptist church, Rev. Jack Dudash, of Lansing, and Rev. C. R. Wright, of the Danby church officiating. Bearers were Anthony Willems, John Warden, Elmer Martin, Harold Graft, Guy Peake and Eugene Lyon. Burial was in Danby cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Butler observed their golden wedding anniversary last winter, while at Dunedin, Fla., where they had spent the past eight winters.
