Butler was born in Genessee county, N.Y., June 10, 1820, making his age 68 years last June. In early boyhood, he moved with his parents to Ohio, where at the age of eleven, he experienced a very marked conversion, and united with the M. E. church, remaining an active member till too feeble to attend public worship. He was married to Marietta Washburn, Feb. 23, 1842, and after seven years removed to Cascade, Kent county, settling on and clearing up a new farm, making it his home for eighteen years. From there he moved to Orleans, Ionia county, remaining nine years, but failing health demanded that he have less work and care. The farm was sold and he came to Berlin eleven years ago to spend the remaining days of his life near his married daughter, Mrs. William Howard. In the fall of ’65 he bade adieu to home and friends and went with the Sixth Michigan Cavalry to do or die for his country, he being a member of company M. of that regiment. He enlisted about the 9th day of September, 1862, and was mustered into the United States service Oct. 11. He was in the service thirteen months, when he was discharged for injuries received while in the line of duty, from which he suffered all through the remainder of his life, growing more apparent as age advanced. Mr. Butler’s family consisted of three daughters, the oldest of which reached the heavenly shore eighteen years ago, where, as she said on her death-bed, she would wait for the remaining ones to come. His earnest, consistent Christian life in the home is the legacy he leaves to his weeping friends. Among the last things his dying lips said were that he was trusting.
