The carriage contained Mr. Butler, an old gentleman seventy-one years of age, his wife and niece. As the horses turned to enter the lane leading to the barn, the carriage was overturned, throwing the occupants out. The reins being wound around Mr. Butler’s wrist, he was dragged several rods along the ground. When assistance came, his niece, although badly hurt herself, was holding the old man’s head in her lap. His injuries, which might not have proven fatal to a younger person, resulted in his death in about three hours. Mrs. Butler was also seriously injured, but will probably recover. The funeral of Mr. Butler occurred on Wednesday afternoon, and was attended by a large number of relatives and friends, by whom he was highly respected.
