He had come from Carson City on the afternoon stage and was to take the train for Ionia. At train time he was standing on the street and made a run to catch it and in attempting to get aboard while the cars were in motion, he fell under and in trying to get up was struck on the back of the head by some part of the engine, one ear torn off and the jugular vein severed, causing him to bleed to death in view of hundreds who had gathered. The coroner’s jury, after hearing the testimony, rendered a verdict that he came to his death through his own carelessness in attempting to board a moving train. In an interview with parties from Pewamo we learned that deceased was a man in the habit of becoming intoxicated and had been drinking just prior to the accident. He had $18 on his person and carried $1000 insurance in favor of his sister Mrs. James Wheeler, who lives on the Wilson Keefer farm.
