Buxton, 82, formerly of Ionia, died Monday evening at the Pennock hospital in Hastings. Born in Grand Rapids July 18, 1893, he was the son of Joseph and Ellen Buxton and attended the Grand Rapids public schools. He was employed by the Grand Rapids street railway and later served with the Grand Rapids police department. In 1916 he served with Company L, 32nd infantry division, national guard, on the Mexican border. After returning from border service he resumed work with the Grand Rapids police until the national guard again called him to serve when the United States entered World War I. He served with 126th infantry at Alsace Lorraine, France, and was awarded the purple heart for wounds received at the battle of Chatteau Thierry August 1, 1918, near the River Seine. Following discharge from the military service he spent several years in Arizona regaining his health. He came to Ionia in 1924 and purchased part interest in the Jackson Park grocery with his brother-in-law, Charles Stoddard. Upon the death of Mr. Stoddard he purchased the remaining interest and owned and operated the Buxton grocery 29 years, selling the business in 1945. In 1928 he was married to Mabel L. White, daughter of Frank and Minnie White. In 1945 he and his family purchased and moved to a farm in Berlin Township. He had worked as a corrections officer at the Michigan Reformatory in Ionia about 18 years retiring in 1962. He and his wife, Mabel have resided at the Provincial house at Hastings since August 1974. He was a member of the First Presbyterian church of Ionia, American Legion, life member of the Ionia lodge F & AM and life member of the Queen Esther chapter, OES. Besides his wife, Mabel, he leaves a son, Richard D. of Woodland, foster daughter, Mrs. Shirley Shull of Gladwin; three grandchildren; brother, Delbert D. of Grand Rapids. Family members will be at the Myers-Roetman funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 pm to receive friends and relatives. Private services will be conducted Thursday morning under the auspices of the Ionia Masonic lodge and assisted by Rev. Richard Erickson of the Woodland United Methodist church. Interment will be at Balcom cemetery. A memorial has been established for the charity of the donor’s choice.
