He had been fishing from a boat with his wife and fell into the water at about 11 a.m. Dale Kauffman, coroner, and Ralph Johnson, deputy sheriff, who investigated, stated that Herbert Buxton, 67, died as the result of a heart attack. Mrs. Buxton informed Kauffman that she and Mr. Buxton went fishing Thursday morning and were on the east end of the lake about 200 feet out from the foot of Sixth Street. She said her husband complained several times of having cramps in his legs and would stand up. On one occasion while starting to sit down he fell out tipping the boat over, she said. She informed the coroner they were in about four feet of water and she was able to stand up and later walk to shore. Morel Davis and Lewis Randall were working at the Davis cottage nearby and hear the commotion and summoned the Lake Odessa fire department. Dr. Jack Trump was also called and administered artificial respiration but was unable to revive Mr. Buxton. Coroner Kauffman said the body was in the water about 15 minutes.
