Harold Martin Buys, 95, of Ionia, died May 18, 2013, at Heartland Health Center.

Harold was born July 21, 1917, in Grand Rapids, the son of Arnott and Mae Buys.

He was a proud veteran of World War ll, serving in the United States Army in 
Europe. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Elks, life member 
of the Lions Club and served on many boards and committees in the community.

He moved to Ionia in 1952 as Office Manager for what was then Runciman Milling 
Co.  In 1971 he purchased the property and renamed it The Ionia Elevator and 
Storage. He retired in 1994.

Surviving are his wife of 73 years, Estella; sons, Roger Craig Buys (Pamela) of 
Mt. Pleasant and Richard M. Buys (Wanda) of Ionia; five grandchildren, Curtis 
Buys of Greenville, N. C., Paige Buys Lamm (Alex) of Jacksonville, Fla., Sarah 
Buys Baidas (Loren) of Milford, Kirsten Buys Johnson (Daniel) of Ferndale and 
Joseph Buys (Tatiana) of Los Angeles, Calif.; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brother Joseph.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be planned for a later 
date. Arrangements are being made by Lake Funeral Home of Ionia. Memorial 
donations may be made in Harold’s name to Heartland Hospice or the First United 
Methodist Church, Ionia.
