She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., May 17, 1921 the daughter of Joseph and Nellie (DeVeau) Rymer. Hazel after years of servitude (called housewife) to her family felt they were old enough to care for themselves and worked as a sales clerk at Herp’s for 10 years. Hazel’s Brooklyn accent and ready sense of humor charmed customers and employees alike. Hazel’s skill for entertaining groups as an imbedded employee of Arbaugh’s of Lansing, transferred along with husband John while living in Portland. Fifteen years of retirement in Gulf Breeze, Fla. before illness struck, was a challenge enjoyed as before, with great friends, bingo, bridge and much coffee and conversation. Finally death came as it does to all mankind, to this great, great lady. Hazel’s steadfast lifelong belief in, and support of her religion has given her a quick pass through the holy gates by Saint Peter and I’m sure Hazel has him laughing already. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Eileen Byrne; daughter-in-law, Sandy Byrne. Surviving are her spouse of 61 years, John Byrne; sons, Jack Byrne and Tom (Starr) Byrne. All represented the very proud immediate family of Hazel. We love you mother and wife, you will be missed. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Thomas of Pensacola, Fla., Jack Jr. of Detroit, Michael of Burlington, Vt., Merry of Rockford, Darby (Lori) of Rockford, Ill., plus numerous most worthy great-grandchildren. The Mass of Christian Burial was held Aug. 19 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Portland, with the Rev. Larry King, Pastor presiding. Rite of Committal followed at Portland Cemetery, where Hazel was buried alongside her mother, Nellie and daughter, Eileen. Arrangements were handled by the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland.
