Jan. 17, 2013 James Arthur Byrne of Ionia was born in 1920 and raised on the family homestead near Grattan, Mich. He graduated from Saint Patrick Catholic School, Parnell, in 1938. He met his lifelong love before proudly serving our country in World War ll. He then spent four long years serving with the 8th Air Force in England, all the while awaiting his return to marry our Mother, Catherine (Albert) of Saint Mary’s Miriam. He was preceded in death by his three sisters and one brother. His wife of 68 years, Catherine, survives along with all seven children; JoAnn and James Wittenbach of South Bend, Ind., Daniel and Diane Byrne of Kalamazoo, Jerry and Mary Byrne of Wayland, Maureen Byrne of La Quinta, Calif., Richard and Sharon Byrne of Silverhill, Ala., Nancy Byrne of La Quinta, Calif., and Patrick Byrne of Easthampton, Ma. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Darrick Gibbs, Thomas (Carly) Warnshuis, Leah Byrne (Dan) Lewis and Devin Wittenbach. Also surviving are three great grandchildren, Tanner and Avery Gibbs, and Aubrey Warnshuis who will also miss him dearly. Dad was a fair and gentle man whose actions and examples for living spoke as much as his words. Our family offers our heartfelt thanks to Holly, Linda and the care-givers from Hospice of Michigan and to Kim Fisher from Home Instead. , The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, High St., Ionia, with Fr. Thomas F. Boufford presiding. Burial at St. Patrick Cemetery, Parnell. Visitation will be at Johnson-Feuerstein Funeral Home, Pleasant St. in Belding from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. with a Scripture service at 7:30 on Thursday, Jan. 17 and at the church one hour before the Friday service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Michigan at 989 Spaulding S.E., Ada, MI, or a charity of your choice.
