Byrne, 86, of Milton, Fla., passed away July 4, 2007 at home after battling leukemia for nine months. John was born in Grand Rapids, and retired from Michigan Bell Telephone Co. after a 37-year career where he had assignments in both Lansing and Grand Rapids. He moved to Gulf Breeze, Fla. in 1980 where he served as the volunteer coordinator for the expansion of the Gulf Breeze Library and moved to Milton, Fla. in 2001. John attended services at St. John Vianney Church in Wyoming, St. Patrick Church in Portland, St. Ann’s Church in Gulf Breeze, Fla. and St. Rose of Lima Church in Milton, Fla. John was an avid golfer and jogger through much of his life and competed in many distance running events. John’s wife of 61 years, Hazel Byrne, passed away two years ago. His daughter, Eileen Byrne, passed away in 1968. He is survived by his sons: Jack and his wife Darlene of Gulf Breeze, Fla., Tom and his wife Starr of Milton, Fla.; his grandchildren, Jack Byrne Jr. of Flint, Merrie Crisman of Newaygo, Steve Trimmer of Jackson, MI, Tom Byrne Jr. of Pensacola, Fla., Lori Byrne of Milton, Fla. and Michael Byrne of Fort Collins, Colo.; his great-grandchildren: Christopher Jessica Chrisman of Newaygo, Leila and Sheila Trimmer of Portland, Randy Byrne of Milton, Fla., Anthony and Zacrye Byrne of Pensacola, Fla., and his great-great grandchild: Brenden Fabiano of Portland. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Rev. Thomas Hack on July 10 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Portland. Rite of Committal will follow as John will be buried alongside his wife and daughter at the Portland Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland.
