D. Bywater, father of Carl D. Bywater, of the Rexall store, and of Mrs. Leo Ryerson, died late Saturday afternoon at his home in Portland. He had been ill several months. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the M.E. church. Mr. Bywater was born in Cayuga county, New York, in 1830 and at the age of five he was taken to Sheridan, Mich., by his parents. He remained there until a young man and then came to this county. At what is now Lake Odessa, he married Miss Evelyn Chapman, whose parents owned one of the farms on which the village is located, and which later came into their possession. Disposing of this, he went to Dakota and was there 10 years. He was well known around Lake Odessa and at Woodbury, where he lived just prior to coming to Portland eight years ago. Surviving are the wife and four children – the two above mentioned and Mrs. Ira Hay, Grand Rapids and Miss Florence Bywater of Detroit. Mr. Bywater spent much of his time at his son’s store. He was of a friendly and jovial disposition and had many warm friends.
