The discourse of Rev. W. K. Spencer, D. D., was a feeling tribute to the high character and life of decedent, whose kindly, sympathetic spirit always found some work to do for the benefit and comfort of others. Her place in the hearts of the people of this city showed how well she had filled the high calling to which her life had been devoted; the good she had accomplished for the community cannot be measured by words. Her services to the church, and to those who needed help, were extended with that willingness of spirit which made her ministrations most acceptable. Her life was not so very long in years, but it was filled to the full with the good deeds that spring from the noblest conception of life. While at the house, for the brief service preceding the public service, Mr. Spencer noticed the following lines hanging in the room which she had occupied as her own, and which struck him as so well expressing the ideal upon which her own life seemed to be founded, that he copied them and asked permission to read them: “Build it well, whatever you do, Build it straight, and strong, and true, Build it clean, and high, and broad, Build it in the eye of God.” “It is well to think well; It is divine to act well.” The music was by Mrs. L. P. Brock, Mrs. Thane Benedict and Mr. Lee Yates, with Miss Gillett at the organ. The selections were excellent, and rendered with the sympathetic feeling to make them most effective. The floral offerings included several set pieces, one from friends in Chicago, one from the South Bend relatives, besides the testimonials from the home friends, including the associate teachers and members of school board. The bearers were Supt. Bemis, and members of the school board in the city at this time: Jas. Vosper, A. S. Wright, F. A. Stiven, J. L. Fowle and J. C. Taylor. Interment was in Highland Park. The friends accompanying the remains from South Bend were: George Cadwell, brother, of Howard City; Mrs. Emma Raider, sister, of Newaygo; Richard Hill, husband of niece, and Mrs. Ina Blanchard, niece, both of South Bend. Other friends attending the funeral were: Charles Cadwell, brother, of Scottsville; Ed. Clark and George Clark, nephews, Grand Rapids. Her sister, Mrs. Clark, of Scottsville, was not able to be present. Card of Thanks: The undersigned, appreciating out of the fullness of their hearts the kindly favors and gracious help of the many friends in their time of need and grief, in this feeble way return their most sincere thanks for the same.
