Max Culehen, 52, of 430 East Washington street, died Thursday morning at 8:30 o’clock at the Battle Creek hospital where he had been since July 29, 1937. He was born in Charlotte, December 20, 1888, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Culehen. He moved to Ionia with his parents when he was but five years of age and had lived the remainder of his life here. He attended the Ionia public schools and was graduated from the Ionia high school. October 13, 1917, he enlisted in the United States army as a sergeant in Battery E. 328th regiment field artillery. He went overseas July 18, 1918, and was transferred to the French flying corps as master signal electrician. He saw service in England, France, Ireland, Italy, Germany and Russia with the intelligence department of the army of occupation. He received his honorable discharge from the army August 30, 1919, and became sales representative with the Ypsilanti Reed Furniture Co. where he worked for fourteen years. In 1933 he became representative for the Johnson Carper Furniture Co. of Roanoke, Va. until his sickness in 1937. He was a member of the Episcopal church, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Surviving are the wife, Anne, of Ionia, to whom he was married May 29, 1927, and one son, Phillip, of Grosse Point Farms. Also one cousin, Major Miles N. Culehen, of Grosse Point Farms. Funeral services will be held from the home at 430 East Washington street, Monday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock. Rev. Henry A. Hanson will officiate and interment will be held at Highland Park cemetery.
